Day 6: The Details The Road To Mayor

June 14, 2015

Sunday, June 14 2015

We had a really great weekend in Hocking Hills. It's a very cool and fun place. I love checking at all the interesting places in the world.

Our friend who has worked on some campaigns in the past drove home with us back to Akron.

She started going through all the details of what goes into a campaign.

  • Who to talk to.
  • T-shirts
  • Volunteers
  • Events to personally attend
  • Events to have surrogates attend
  • Getting an event coordinator
  • Precinct strategy

These details went on in pretty great detail for some time. Then she said, "Those initial things will get you started and once you do those things your next steps will start to reveal themselves."

It was fairly sobering.

But like all things in life, big tasks are just a series of small tasks.

When you pile on a whole list of things that need to get accomplished it becomes ominous. But in reality it's not usually that big of a deal.

I am a huge believe in creating lists.

I used Trello for quite some time. But I've recently moved to Toodledo and 2Do.

These tools let get all the items you need to do in one place. Then you just start pulling them into your day. I do this the night before every work day.

I usually try to get 3 things done in a day.

I also try never to schedule meetings on Mondays and Fridays. Those are my big productivity days. That's not always possible or even preferable. But it's a general guideline.

It's 7pm on day 6. So I still have some time to get some things done. I want to read another chapter in my book: How To Win A Local Election, Revised.

And I might write another Initiatives blog post.

I'm always limited by money and time. We all are. And time is the most valuable of the two. I love thinking about how best to spend my time.

8 hours of sleep is so important to me, not having it isn't really ever an issue for me. 10pm to 6am is my usual schedule. I like to be in bed about 9, however. I like to read the news and hangout on Facebook on my phone in bed. It's just cozy and relaxing.

I don't have an antenna or cable. All my media comes from the Internet. Our family usually watches Netflix at night.

And I usually don't listen to the radio on my way to and from work. I usually listen to a podcast of some sort. I'm currently listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. I have never had history explained to me in such a fascinating and interesting way. I can't recommend it enough.

I've been told more than a few times that I'm a busy guy. (I haven't told you about my day job(s) yet.) But I really don't see it that way. I only do what I love to do (that's not hard because I love to do A LOT of things). So for me I'm just always having fun.

See you tomorrow.
