A Really Great Guy I Met This Week

Filed under: Business, Video — sage @ 10:23 am

I was down in Columbus Ohio for the Small Business Marketing Unleashed Conference. It’s a great conference that I totally love being at.

One of the people I met was John Tuggle. This is his site:
Online Guitar Lessons, Slide Guitar Blues Lessons | Learning Guitar Now

He sells blues guitar lesson dvd’s and downloads. He was a great inspiration for many at the show because of his success and innovation for his online store.

If you are looking to learn guitar or if you are looking at successful online initiatives, definitely check out John’s site.

Nice work John! I hope we get to meet up again sometime.

T. Boone Pickens at the National Press Club

Filed under: Quotes — sage @ 8:14 am

I couldn’t rip myself away from the screen as I watched T. Boone Pickens at the National Press Club.

Here are some quotes from that speech that stood out to me:

  • I don’t care who you meet, you’ll never meet someone who’s drilled more dry holes than me.
  • Anything is better than foreign oil for energy.
  • Anything American, I’m for. I’m against foreign oil.
  • America could be revitalized just by managing our energy properly.

Here are some facts he stated:

4 barrels of oil = 1 barrel of diesel.
4 barrels of oil = 2.5 barrels of gasoline.

85 million barrels of oil every day of world production. America uses 21 million barrels of that production every day. That’s 25% of all the oil used every day. America is 4% of the world population. America has 3% of the oil reserves in the world. Oil production peaked in 1970 in the U.S.

The Alaskan pipeline currently produces 1 million barrels a day. The pipe is capable of delivering 2 million barrels a day. There won’t be another oil pipeline built. There will, however, be a natural gas pipeline built. Drilling on the west and east coast will produce a maximum of another 1 million barrels a day.

Joe Biden Football Hall of Fame Rally, originally uploaded by Sage Lewis.

This is a crowning day of glory for me. This is the first picture I have ever had of me and a major political figure.
Thanks Joe!

You can see all of the pictures I took at the event here.

Rsync Problems

Filed under: Uncategorized — sage @ 4:44 pm

For the life of me, I couldn’t get files to transfer from an XP laptop to a FreeNas samba server.

This was why:

rsync Linux Commands: Remote file copy (Synchronize file trees)

a trailing slash on the source changes this behavior to transfer all files from the directory src/bar on the machine foo into the /data/tmp/. A trailing / on a source name means “copy the contents of this directory”. Without a trailing slash it means “copy the directory”. This difference becomes particularly important when using the –delete option.

I had this:
C:\cygwin\bin\rsync.exe –verbose –progress –stats –recursive –exclude-from=”/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/rockyl/My Documents/rsync-exclude.txt” “/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/rockyl/My Documents” “/cygdrive/s/personalbackups/rocky/My Documents/”

When I needed this:
C:\cygwin\bin\rsync.exe –verbose  –progress –stats –recursive –exclude-from=”/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/rockyl/My Documents/rsync-exclude.txt”  “/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/rockyl/My Documents/” “/cygdrive/s/personalbackups/rocky/My Documents/”

Do you see that trailing slash I missed? That caused me to only backup directories and not the files within the directories.

Tips On Getting Involved in Community Development Online

Filed under: Uncategorized — sage @ 12:16 pm

This is a post specifically for people who attended my Community class at Small Business Marketing Unleashed in Columbus Ohio.

But if you haven’t come to the class, you might find this useful too.

Here are my tips for getting involved in online communities.

  1. You have to participate to make it a success.
    1. You can’t just setup a community and sit back and wait for people to show up.
    2. You need to go to other communities and participate.
  2. Pick one or two initiatives.
    1. Doing too much will make you lose focus.
    2. Pick things that look fun to you. Otherwise, you won’t do any of them.
  3. Make goals.
    1. Setting a number of subscribers you would like is often a good goal for communities.
    2. Set a time frame to accomplish the goals.
    3. Especially initially, be conservative. Getting comfortable with your new community will take some time.

Here are some community building bookmarks that you might find useful.
